If You Dream It….

Plaza Centro Parking Garage Facade

It all began for me when I attended a presentation meeting at the Convention Center regarding Tucson Origins Heritage Park. After that meeting, I was hooked! Since that time, I have toured the ancient dwellings of our ancestors, made an adobe brick from the earth at the base of Tumamoc Hill, supported St. Augustine’s Plaza, The Screening Room facade, attended the premiere of Tucson’s historic film, the opening of the Fourth Avenue underpass, Tucson anniversary events, and more. I am in love with downtown.

In recent weeks I have had the opportunity to visit the downtowns of San Diego, Los Angeles and Ft. Worth. Each is thriving. Each is unique. Each celebrates the culture of its community. We should do the same.

We are currently celebrating Tucson’s entrepreneurial spirit. Our current incarnation of downtown includes many locally owned businesses. This is as it should be. Making our place unique. Keeping more dollars in our community. Our leaders should continue to support this idea. We should continue to lure Tucson’s best and brightest to downtown. I often find myself dreaming of a Tucson that could be and I often share those thoughts with leaders in our community.

Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a Bookman’s on the corner of Fifth & Broadway, totally solar-powered? Within walking distance of four parking garages and three student housing developments? What about Beyond Bread? Tucson Tamale Company? Jax Kitchen? A Fox Restaurant? Feast? Or, what about MAST or Obsidian Gallery? I have thought downtown an ideal spot for Obsidian for a couple of years. Dream it? News is, Obsidian is coming downtown! And how about luring some businesses back, like Yikes or Picante? Which Tucson favorite would you like to see relocate to the city core?

I can’t wait until Zen Rock does their facade like they’re supposed to. It would make Congress’s appearance nicer.
