Honor My Father

4 Nov

One of Tucson’s most spectacular events is her annual All Souls Procession. My first time as viewer several years ago, I went to remember the life of my grandmother. I haven’t missed an event since. Last year 20,000 people participated in the procession, followed by the spectacle of music, dancers, aerial dancers, larger than life creatures, fire and the urn. The urn carries remembrances, photos and prayers of lost loved ones. The event closes with the urn being hoisted to the heavens, lit afire, with the ashes joining the spirits to another world. This annual event supports many mouths one stomach, a non-profit working to provide food for the hungry. The procession begins at University and Fourth Avenue, ending (this year) at the Mercado District on the west side of downtown on Congress Avenue. 6 PM. I’ll be there to remember my Dad. He left this world on Christmas Day.

Not enough? Then, check out the local film Flor de Muertos, featuring the music of Calexico, at the Rialto Theatre on Saturday night. Or, join Calexico in the after party on Sunday. Same place.

Thank you for the information about Dia de Los Muertos for future reference! Your blog is great for Tucsonans and others to know what’s going on downtown!
