Ride On!

18 Jun

Wow! What a party! If you missed out, you truly missed out on a fantastically fun time that is uniquely Tucson. Last night’s Bike-In celebrated bicycle riding, fashion, the arts and community. Dressed up or in Tucson bohemia style, cyclists of all ages gathered at Old Main for a casual bike ride through campus to our destination downtown. Serenaded by a bike-come-cat with a cassette player wired to a homemade stereo to “ganga” speakers, we joyously cycled through neighborhoods, waving, ringing bike bells, classical and jazz music wafting around us.

When we arrived at our final destination, cyclists became fashionistas, walking the red carpet with their bicycles. Six award winners received fashionable messenger bags. We were then treated to the outdoor movie screening of the documentary, “Bill Cunningham New York,” sharing the life of NY Times photographer and cyclist and his love of humanity and fashion on New York streets over several decades. He’s 80, still riding his bike and still taking pictures!

Thanks Kylie and Emily for putting together such a fun event. Thanks, too, to Living Streets Alliance, BICAS, Tucson Velo, Ordinary Bicycle Shop and Pima County Clean Air. Thanks Cinema La Placita for showing the film.  I even became the subject for many snapshots by several photographers!  How ’bout that?!
