Bridging the Gap

The underbelly.

One of several canopies that pay homage to our history, our sense of place.

The walkway and decorative balustrade.

So, a couple of weeks ago, I found myself riding my bike over the Santa Cruz River by way of the new Luis Gutierrez bridge. The design elements are cool – combining the old with the new – honoring our history and looking into our future. I met some cyclists half way up. “We’re inspectors, right?” he queried. “Of course! We’re checking things out for everyone’s safety.” You know me, I like to be among the first experiencing these new things! The bridge is open for pedestrians and cyclists. When complete, it will carry the modern streetcar and cars as well, connecting to the rising new westside of downtown.
