Smooth Operator

Saturday night I realized I’ve been to the opening of most of Tucson’s recent restaurant wave…The Hub, 47 Scott, Reilly’s Craft Pizza, downtown kitchen & cocktails, Penca.

Well, Flagstaff’s new Diablo Burger on Congress Street in the Rialto block wins the prize for smooth. The entire experience went without a single glitch.  The restaurant was filled with patrons of all ages, yet one never felt that they weren’t being attended to.  There was a wait when we arrived – albeit brief – and staff apologized for the wait and thanked us for our understanding when we were seated.

The service was genuine & attentive, the food amazing and reasonably priced. The space itself had a sense of swag – an old motorbike hanging on its side from the wall houses the phone, for example. The windows swing out & open to connect patrons to passersby. The community seating, for more than fifty customers, invites conversation & connection.

The focus is on the local foods movement and grass-fed beef from Canyon Diablo in northern AZ. My friend had the Wrigley Field Burger (bacon, swiss, grilled onions, honey mustard) while I had the Vitamin B (bacon, beet and blue cheese). Frites, with herbs de provence, included. Neither of us were disappointed.  We didn’t dare the “medium-rare” suggestion, but look forward to trying it next time!

Thanks, Diablo Burger, for your commitment to local food and to your warm, friendly welcome to Tucson.
