It’s in Arizona!

IMG_2986The Good Oak Bar is open for business. And it’s all about Arizona. Owner Derrick Widmark (of Diablo Burger fame) is focusing on the flavors of beers and wines created here in our state.

Widmark is inspired by the sense of place. He chose to open businesses here, with his own money I might add, because he’s taken with the unique spirit that is Tucson. He and his staff work hard to make sure that Tucsonans and guests are treated to something special.

We sauntered in during opening week. The stools weren’t in place yet at the bar. Stained oak wood abounds at the bar and in the high back booths. We ordered our AZ wines and plopped in a corner. “You’re in the Tony Soprano spot. From your vantage point, you can see everything that’s going on in the bar.” He proceeded to spend the next twenty minutes in the booth with us, sharing his love of food, drink and place. Posters and Life Magazine articles from the Tucson Boosters of the 20’s and 30’s grace the walls. This organization, Derrick notes, was the first of its kind in the nation. A huge mural celebrating Tucson can be seen on the wall and – font forward – in the mirrors over the bar. An historic streetcar rail is set in the floor where patrons can step up to the bar. The place is comfortable and warm.  Derrick spends a considerable amount of time to get things just right – paying attention to every detail. He wants to make sure the experience you have isn’t one that you’ll quickly forget.

I, for one, am grateful for excellent customer service and friendliness. And this is a place where Derrick knows my name.

Step up to the bar and stand on a piece of Tucson history.

This Tucson Boosters poster proved the inspiration for Widmark.
